Parts Of Columbus's Ship[

THE PART FOR THE WHOLE 22

The Spoliation. Sacristy of the Cathedral of Toledo . Oil on
(165 x 99 cm). El Greco

Who is this suffering Man? What work is included? Who painted it? Will
better to sharpen sight and ingenuity, as even coming from a far country, he gained a place among the discerning clientele of the city where it was installed. It would not hurt to explain those features which distinguish his style and make it one of the great painters of all time.

Right. Not difficult to identify this cut, as the intensity of red lipstick and look mystical and supernatural character, betraying its author, El Greco. The issue, as we interpeta this painter, has some peculiarities: the first non-directly based on any of the Gospels, at least in the canonical and the second: the unprecedented contrast between the intensity of the red robe or habit of Jesus, and the motley collection of characters that surround it, with a predominance of dark colors. The case represented shows a moment of Via Crucis (the way that Jesus must go up to the hill of Calvary, where he would be crucified), in which Jesus is about to be stripped of his habit crubre your body for the crowd that continues and jelly.

The composition is very complex, because the figure of Christ adopts a diamond-shaped and is situated in the center of the canvas, not obsttante, you may look at other ways: starting from the bottom of the table look left the three Marys and the right a man who is working on the tree on which Jesus was crucified there, this set of figures, noted for its color, form a triangle that leaves the top and side in a plane secondary and dark, which underscores the sense of depth and angst that the author tries to express. The top figures are swirling on the shoulders of Christ, arms and hands stretching out to seize the robe. The figures are elongated like flames, Jesus seems to float in the middle of this crowd that pushes the ordeal. The soldier on the left, dressed in the style of s. XVI, who represent the Roman custody. If you look at his armor, see the red reflection on the tunic polished metal. The three Marys look at the tree, anticipating the sacrifice.
The feeling of being overwhelmed, anxiety, is absolute. But amid this crowd screaming and gesticulating, we must detacar the serene face of Christ, who has his right hand to his chest as a sign of acceptance of his own death. At the top of the table, the further the viewer, it opens a blue-gray sky announcing storm and barely be seen through the spears of the soldiers mingle with the crowd.
El Greco manages to transmit a special dramatic force, this time of the Via Crucis. It is a painting for the devotion, which expresses popular piety away all ornament. The red of the habit that occupies the central part of the painting stands out for its intense chromaticism, but also by the folds created by the movement of the body of Jesus and the shadows. It is also the red of blood and passion. The acid yellow of the characters below is the necessary counterpoint to the work. We are therefore faced with one of the best exponents of the Mannerist style of this painter of Greek origin who was able to translate the rich colors of the Venetian school to Spain at the end of s. Counter XVI. A painter who also adopt the lengujae Tintoretto agitated and nervous, his passion for complex compositions full of figures in addition expressive of the grandeur of Michelangelo. An obvious advance much more modern trends such as the expressionism of s. XX (which did so much for the appreciation of the painter).
